The GUARDIAN project began as an Innovation Design Engineering Master's venture, a collaboration between Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art. It was inspired by the staggering realization that cardiac arrest claims over 480 lives daily, highlighting the inadequacy of current solutions.
CONTEXT
A cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood around the body.
This condition claims over 480 lives daily in the UK, with only 5% of citizens feeling capable of providing First Aid and an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rate of under 10%.
Although AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) are becoming more common, they only attempt to restart the heart without pumping blood around the body, which can lead to organ necrosis, and they are directly effective in just 25% of cardiac arrest cases.
Chest compressions effectively mimic the heart's function, ensuring oxygen-rich blood circulates throughout the body.
